The White of Ships

Poem by Marie Luise Kaschnitz (translated by Lisel Mueller); hand painted lithographs by Michele Burgess on Gampi and Twinrocker handmade papers. 10” x 6 1/2”. Edition of 30. 2008.

Marie Luise Kaschnitz (1901-1974) was renowned in Germany as a distinguished poet and writer of fiction and essays. Having remained in Germany through the Nazi regime and the Second World War, she became an important voice in a literature of commitment concerned with confronting the immediate past. “The White of Ships” was written in the last decade of her life and has been beautifully translated by German American poet, Lisel Mueller. In this artist’s book, Michele Burgess’s prints are interwoven with the poem to speak of the past and present, simultaneously. The images speak to the weight of memory and the slow and truthful discoveries experienced in solitude.
